High-Voltage Safe Measurements at Charging Stations

The everyday use and acceptance of electric vehicles depends on the widespread availability of charging facilities. Various charging concepts are required for the expansion of the charging infrastructure and are being tested in detail by the operators of charging station networks. High-voltage safe current and voltage measurements must be carried out at many points. The following example shows how this can be done.

Icon Background

Background

Long charging times and an insufficient number of charging points hinder the use electric vehicles. For this reason, different charging systems are being developed to meet different needs, particularly to promote the expansion of the charging infrastructure. Vehicle manufacturers are advertising their vehicles with ever shorter charging times, but the different charging stations have to be validated or further optimized to provide the best possible performance.

Measurement task

Current, voltage and power measurement in the entire loading chain to optimize the systems.

Icon Challenge

Challenge

For the verification of charging stations, current, voltage and power have to be measured in the entire charging chain, whereby different charging characteristics have to be tested by changing vehicle types. This allows the charging functions and the different load conditions to be investigated. Current, voltage and power must be measured on the input and output side to the charging station in the high-voltage lines.

Charging plug types
For charging electric vehicles there are many types of plugs and charging characteristics.

The CSM Measurement Solution

  • HV Breakout Modules are inserted into the high-voltage cables, which record all desired measured variables (current, voltage and power) and ensure high-voltage safety. They are also available in three versions for different applications. The appropriate module is selected for each measurement point.
  • All measurement modules are connected and synchronized via a protocol converter XCP-Gateway.
  • With the Vector eMobilityAnalyzer for vMeasure, the charging current, energy flow, charging time and charging capacity can be measured efficiently.

Benefits

The HV Breakout Modules allow HV-safe installation in the high-voltage cables of the charging station and in the high-voltage on-board power supply system of vehicles. All relevant analysis data can be calculated in real-time.
